Generations too old, maybe.

screenshot of WRC Generations

I played through a whole career of WRC Generations and gave this thing a fair shake. It didn't really redeem itself, to be honest. Sure, it has models of the WRC cars from a number of generations but it also seems to have a driving system that hasn't changed in... I don't know how many iterations of this game. I've played something like 6 versions of this, the official WRC game, and I'm pretty sure the career mode is basically the same as in WRC 8, which came out 3 years before this one. I think the only new thing in WRC G is the hybrid modern rally cars, which were kind of fun to drive, actually, but didn't redeem this game, I'm afraid.

First off, the driving feel is atrocious. Everything is floaty and too prone to drifting. I play in old-school mode (with the camera above and behind the car) on the controller so maybe my experience is different from the intended gameplay? In a competition between the two major rally games out there now, the other one is better feeling to play in my preferred mode. On top of this, the career mode doesn't really bring anything new to the "career" racing stuff and is really more like a team manager role instead of a driver role, which I've always found confusing. There are a number of idiosyncracies in the career mode like not being able to see what non-rally events are coming up between rallies and being able to ditch your WRC2 team in the middle of a season to start a WRC1 season (actually I liked this part because I wanted to be done). I feel like someone should make a game that does the career more authentically from the driver's point of view somehow but, then again, the market for these games is pretty small, I 'm sure. Throw in a very repetitive soundtrack, significant cheaters on the global time sheets, and other annoyances and this game could use a reprep before the next outing.

If you've got a choice of rally games, this one might work if you like varied locations and prefer a more arcade feel. Just turn in way earlier than you think you should and you can get through the stages. Probably.
