A relatively standard action RPG/Roguelite that looks and plays nice.

Do you enjoy a lo-fi, pixelated action RPG? Do you like a game that's not too difficult and yet still provides enough challenge (in the early levels) to make success feel like an achievement? Are you okay with the standard features of most modern Roguelite games? Do you want a story that sort of makes sense, I guess? Well, Children of Morta has all of this and more, friends.

The formula is rather simple: you go in a randomly generated dungeon, hack and slash your way through an army of varied monsters, die or win and then cash in your rewards back at the homebase to gain new powers or improve your abilities. We've seen in before in other games and yet it is still a solid formula. Children of Morta doesn't really bring anything new to the genre but I'm not sure it needs to. It is still a good time and you can spend a little or a lot of time spamming buttons to your heart's content until you find your ending. Personally, I knocked out some of the grindier bits of acheivements as I'm a completionist but I wasn't terribly sad about having to repeat levels just to level up or find some secrets (that one took a while). It's a relaxing, meditative process once your characters are OP, as the kids say these days.

There are a few complaints about the game, of course. The pixelated style is a little vague for the detailed images, for example. I also had a couple runs throw in some unintended extra challenge when my basic attack stopped doing damage for some unexplained reason. I guess folks would say that despite the random dungeons that there really isn't much that is unique and therefore the game could feel repetitive. The story is also kind of weak in the end but did have some touching moments along the way. Also the extremely white names of the characters and the narrator always saying "the Bergson" was a bit off-putting.

However, this game is worth a play for fans of the genre despite not breaking new ground.
